Looking after someone else’s child is a huge responsibility. Mark and Julie Davidson regularly look after their grandson James so they decided to do a Mini First Aid 2 hour baby and child class. They wanted to be sure they had the knowledge and confidence to know what to do in an emergency situation. And thank goodness they did.

Mark describes in his own words the day when his grandson James had a febrile seizure whilst in the car with him:

“A few months ago, my wife and I attended a Mini First Aid class. The class was brilliant but we left hoping we would never need the skills we had learned. Luckily the knowledge was fresh in my mind when James suffered a febrile seizure in the car whilst I was driving with him and my daughter. I pulled over and applied what I had learned, whilst my daughter phoned for an ambulance.

When I checked, James had stopped breathing and was starting to turn blue. I checked his airway before starting CPR. I stopped when I noticed fluid coming from James's mouth and put him in the recovery position. I tapped several times on his shoulder blades and a lot more fluid came out. James then (thankfully) started crying and breathing normally.

Luckily, the paramedics arrived within ten minutes. They praised what I had done and only needed to escort us to hospital for further observation. James has since made a full recovery and is back to his usual, happy self.

I cannot thank Mini First Aid enough for providing me with the knowledge to know what to do and to act quickly. You just never expect something like this to happen, but you can save a person’s life in the time it takes for the paramedics to arrive. I cannot think of anything I have done in my lifetime that I consider better value for money.”
